July 2025 Community of Interest Highlights

The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest is a growing platform that facilitates the exchange of emerging trends, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of research opportunities. Designed to foster connections in an informal and collaborative setting, it brings together organizations, faculty, researchers, and students, enabling them to engage and collaborate effectively.

The highlights from our recent CI gathering on Thursday, July 17th, 2025, are as follows:

Professor Maryem from the Faculty of Applied Sciences &Technology and Professor Kia Sanei joined the session. They have been doing incredible work in health and aging, and digital innovation. They talk about their ongoing project and discuss the following points:

  • The purpose of the ongoing research project is to explore the effects of Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) on muscle mass preservation or enhancement in adults aged 65+.

  • The study will employ a within-subject design and use segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis for precise measurement of muscle mass.

  • Both BFR and NMES provide low-impact alternatives to traditional resistance training, making them especially beneficial for older adults with physical limitations.

  • Despite the individual benefits shown by BFR and NMES, no study has yet directly compared both methods within the same individuals or examined cross-education effects (muscle gains in the untreated limb).

  • The team plans to apply for the NFRF Exploration 2025 Grant. While partnerships are not mandatory, letters of support from the community, industry, or non-profit organizations will strengthen the application.

  • The team is also looking to connect with partner organizations for participant recruitment to support the study.

The participant also discusses the need for a Hub/Platform for older adults where they can access all the relevant information altogether:

  • A centralized digital platform is needed to help older adults and caregivers easily access relevant information, services, and resources in one place.

  • A navigation gap was identified—older adults and caregivers often face challenges in locating and coordinating community, health, and accessibility services.

Please note:

The next Community of Interest (CI) gathering is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. We invite all individuals interested in participating in this important dialogue. Whether you are a researcher, practitioner, student, or committed to improving the quality of life for older adults in our communities, your insights and experiences are highly valued. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and the communities that support them.
