May 2025 Community of Interest Highlights

The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest is a growing platform that facilitates the exchange of emerging trends, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of research opportunities. Designed to foster connections in an informal and collaborative setting, it brings together organizations, faculty, researchers, and students, enabling them to engage and collaborate effectively.

The highlights from our recent CI gathering on Thursday, May 16th, are as follows:

The Humber student presented the survey “Barriers and Facilitators to Implementing Accessibility Options in Homes for Adults 60+” results in front of the group:

  • The student highlighted the top accessibility features requested by older adults.

  • They emphasized the importance of timely access to information and support services for older adults and caregivers.

The participant reflected on the findings and shared their thoughts:

  • They emphasized the urgent need to increase awareness about accessibility options available through municipalities and service providers and create targeted educational campaigns aimed at both older adults and service providers.

  • They also strongly advocated for policy changes at the municipal and provincial levels to make home modifications more affordable and accessible and highlighted the importance of integrating accessibility into urban planning and housing design standards.

Please note:

The next Community of Interest (CI) gathering is scheduled for Thursday, June 19th, 2025, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. We invite all individuals interested in participating in this important dialogue. Whether you are a researcher, practitioner, student, or committed to improving the quality of life for older adults in our communities, your insights and experiences are highly valued. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and the communities that support them.
