October 2025 Community of Interest Highlights

The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest is a growing platform that facilitates the exchange of emerging trends, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of research opportunities. Designed to foster connections in an informal and collaborative setting, it brings together organizations, faculty, researchers, and students, enabling them to engage and collaborate effectively.

The highlights from our recent CI gathering on Thursday, October 16, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Lack of Centralized Information for Older Adults

    • The group discussed the difficulty older adults face in accessing information about available benefits, tax credits, and community support programs.

    • It was highlighted that there is no single centralized platform that consolidates this information in an accessible and easy-to-navigate format.

    • Members agreed that this gap creates barriers to awareness and access, leading many older adults to miss out on eligible support and services.

    • There was a suggestion to explore the development of a centralized resource hub that could connect with older adults, caregivers, and service providers.

  2. Accessibility Challenges in Homes

    • The participants discussed common accessibility barriers in existing homes, including lack of ramps, narrow doorways, and inadequate bathroom modifications.

    • It was noted that minor home renovations can significantly improve safety and independence for older adults, but awareness and affordability remain challenges.

    • The group emphasized the importance of education and assessment tools (e.g., home accessibility checklists, free assessments) to support homeowners in identifying accessibility needs.

  3. Accessible Housing and New Construction Concerns

    • The conversation highlighted that new residential developments are not being designed with accessibility in mind.

    • There was a shared concern about the lack of universal design standards or enforcement in new builds, which limits housing options for older adults and people with disabilities.

    • The team discussed the need for advocacy and policy engagement to encourage builders and municipalities to integrate accessibility features at the design stage rather than retrofits.

Note:

The next Community of Interest (CI) gathering is scheduled for Thursday, November 20, 2025, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. We invite all individuals interested in participating in this important dialogue. Whether you are a researcher, practitioner, student, or are committed to improving the quality of life for older adults in our communities, your insights and experiences are highly valued. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and the communities that support them.
