September 2025 Community of Interest Highlights
The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest is a growing platform that facilitates the exchange of emerging trends, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of research opportunities. Designed to foster connections in an informal and collaborative setting, it brings together organizations, faculty, researchers, and students, enabling them to engage and collaborate effectively.
The highlights from our recent CI gathering on Thursday, September 18, 2025, are as follows:
Students presented their research on the impact of design and highlighted the importance of design elements for older adults.
Key takeaways from the presentations:
Accessibility and Safety: Designs that reduce physical barriers, improve lighting, and enhance navigation are essential for older adults.
Inclusivity: Universal design principles benefit not only older adults but also people of all ages and abilities.
Well-being: Good design promotes social connection, reduces isolation, and supports mental and physical health.
Case Study Insights: Students showcased 3 case studies demonstrating how strategic and innovative design can positively influence communities and individuals.
Participants engaged in an interactive discussion and explored how the case studies could inform future projects and inspire practical, scalable solutions for age-friendly environments.
Participants also discussed the cost of design as a critical consideration in implementing design solutions.
Challenges associated with adopting design solutions were highlighted, such as balancing quality and affordability while ensuring designs remain financially accessible, with participants noting that there is currently no government funding large enough to support major structural design changes for accessibility.
Note:
The next Community of Interest (CI) gathering is scheduled for Thursday, October 17, 2025, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. We invite all individuals interested in participating in this important dialogue. Whether you are a researcher, practitioner, student, or are committed to improving the quality of life for older adults in our communities, your insights and experiences are highly valued. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and the communities that support them.
